Who are we?
Black Bull Biochar is a fast-growing UK company scaling the use of biochar, a carbon-rich material that improves soil health and removes carbon from the atmosphere. We produce biochar at our sites across the UK and sell verified carbon removal credits to corporate buyers, ensuring every tonne of carbon removed meets the highest standards of quality and traceability.
Who are you?
We are looking for a motivated professional to lead BBB’s carbon certification, strategy, and market engagement to ensure our removals continue to set the benchmark for quality and rigour in the biochar carbon removal sector. This is a pivotal role at the intersection of science, policy, and market delivery.
You will manage our carbon projects end-to-end, coordinate audits and verification cycles, and represent BBB in conversations with marketplaces, registries, and corporate buyers. At the same time, you will keep a close watch on macro trends in carbon markets and policy to inform strategic decisions.
The ideal candidate is someone who can work across both technical detail and high-level strategy with confidence, combining strong analytical and organisational ability with a genuine interest in climate and carbon removal.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage the certification and audit process for BBB’s carbon removal projects, delivering Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) reports, maintaining key project documentation (e.g. PDDs, LCAs), and coordinating with consultants and internal teams.
- Work cross-functionally with operations and product teams to link field data with carbon outcomes, ensuring consistent data integrity and compliance across operations, carbon accounting, and reporting.
- Evaluate and implement certification methodologies (e.g. Verra, Puro.earth, Isometric, EBC) to align BBB with the most robust and credible standards.
- Manage commercial and market engagement, including relationships with registries, marketplaces, buyers, and ratings agencies, as well as leading due diligence and contractual negotiations for offtakes.
- Track policy and market trends in carbon removal, climate regulation, and voluntary carbon markets, distilling implications for BBB’s strategy.
- Communicate complex technical and scientific concepts clearly to non-expert stakeholders, both internally and externally.
Key requirements:
- BSc or MSc in related field.
- Experience delivering certification, sustainability reporting, or in carbon removal.
- Strong analytical mindset, able to interpret data and apply rigour to decision-making.
- Excellent organisational skills, comfortable delivering complex projects with multiple documents, partners, and deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, adaptable across audiences.
- Confidence working across both technical and commercial projects, and independently in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
- Strong motivation to work on climate and carbon removal, with curiosity to learn across technical, market, and policy dimensions.
Desired skills/experience:
- STEM or quantitative background (e.g. environmental science, engineering, LCA).
- Prior experience in a start-up or fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with key carbon market actors (e.g. Isometric, Puro.Earth, Sylvera).
- Full, clean UK driving license.
What you will get from us:
- 25 days annual leave a year, not including bank holidays.
- AXA private health insurance.
- A hands-on experience working in a purpose-driven, fast-paced startup at the frontier of agricultural and climate technology innovation.
- The chance to grow and develop in a positive work environment with an engaged and motivated team, learning about biochar carbon removal in the process.
- The opportunity to shape a cleaner, more resilient future by removing carbon from the atmosphere and restoring soil health, creating a lasting impact for generations to come.
