About Black Bull Biochar

Black Bull Biochar (BBB) is a growing UK company scaling the use of biochar, a carbon-rich material that improves soil health and removes carbon from the atmosphere. We exist to restore our environment, remove carbon and enrich our industrial and agricultural systems. The company is entering an exciting expansion phase and building a team that will define the future of regenerative agriculture, nutrient management, and carbon removal.

About the role

We are looking for a hands‑on Senior Operations Technician to lead the day‑to‑day technical and operational running of BBB’s production, logistics, and deployment activities.

This is a practical, varied role for someone who enjoys solving problems, improving processes, coordinating across teams, and ensuring everything runs smoothly, from equipment and feedstock supply through to quality control and on‑farm biochar delivery.

You will work closely with pyrolysis hosts, suppliers, farmers, agronomy teams, and BBB leadership to ensure that our operations are safe, efficient, and reliable as we scale. You do not need to be a biochar expert on day one, but you do need curiosity, ownership, and a calm, practical approach.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys fieldwork as much as structure, and wants to help build the operational backbone of a climate‑tech company.

Key responsibilities:

  • Oversee day‑to‑day production and site operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable processes
  • Maintain quality standards, certification requirements and operational readiness
  • Coordinate logistics for equipment, deliveries, and stock movement
  • Manage inventory and procurement, including parts, consumables, and equipment
  • Lead quality control, including sampling, testing, record‑keeping, and operational compliance
  • Troubleshoot operational issues and work with partners to resolve practical problems quickly
  • Improve internal processes and workflows to support scale and reduce friction
  • Support on‑farm and industrial deployments, ensuring equipment, contractors and materials are in place
  • Maintain clear documentation, from SOPs to safety records and operational reports
  • Collaborate with agronomy, sales, and leadership, aligning operations with customer and project needs

What we are looking for:

  • Technical and operational capability, ideally from manufacturing, engineering, biomass, waste, agriculture or similar sectors
  • Multiskilled technician with strong process experience (NVQ Level 3 / HNC)
  • High level of metal work hand skills, welding skills
  • Highly organised, with strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritise at short notice
  • A calm, practical problem‑solver who stays level‑headed when plans change
  • Flexible to work pattern changes and keen to stay until the job is done
  • Strong communication skills, able to build relationships with partners, suppliers, and farmers
  • Curious and eager to learn, especially around biochar, soil health, and carbon removal
  • Committed to safe working practices, with experience in H&S, compliance, or site management being a bonus
  • You don’t need to tick every box. We value mindset, humility, and the ability to learn quickly.

What you will get from us:

  • A cross-cutting hands-on experience working in a purposeful, impact-driven, fast-paced start-up at the frontier of climate tech innovation.
  • The chance to grow and shape an organisation in its early stages.
  • Health insurance including dental, optical and mental health cover.
  • 25 days annual leave a year, not including bank holidays and the ability to remote work permanently for two weeks a year, and the option to buy back up to 5 days of annual leave.
  • Building a greener future where your work removes carbon, restores soil health, decarbonises energy and creates a lasting positive impact for generations to come.
